Baton-shaped carved bone pin made from a deer long bone. This piece, recovered from archaeological excavations at the Anderson Mound (Jungle Prada Complex) in St. Petersburg, Florida, has traces of copper staining or pigment on it and was probably used as a hair pin. This carved bone pin dates to AD 1200-1400 during the Safety Harbor Period.

Similar pins have been found at other Florida sites, including the Picnic Mound in Hillsborough County. Two pins (head portions) were recovered there with traces of copper staining noted.

Lafayette Projectile Point

Stone projectile point recovered from the Anderson Mound (Jungle Prada Complex), St. Petersburg, Florida. Referred to as a Lafayette point by archaeologists, it dates to about 1200 BC-AD 200 but was found in much later contexts dating to about AD 1000 during the Safety Harbor Period. It was probably an artifact found and reused by Safety Harbor people. Lafayette points are medium to large in size with distinctive corner notches. It is made from chert, a flint-like material found in Florida. Note the saw-like serrations on the edges indicating that it was probably used as a knife rather than as a projectile.
